Before you come
The road in from San José, how the days actually run here, and the month you are thinking about.
Getting here
San José, then the coast road
Cahuita sits on Route 36, south of Limón. Every way in crosses the mountains from San José first.
- Airport
- San José (SJO), Juan Santamaría International. Limón (LIO) also takes domestic flights from San José, about 45 minutes. From Limón it is 45 kilometres south on Route 36, about 45 minutes by car or taxi.
- By car
- Route 32 through Braulio Carrillo, then Route 36 south from Limón. Four to four and a half hours. Longer when the park traffic sits.
- By shuttle
- Same road. A private one takes about what driving takes. A shared one stops on the way, closer to five hours.
- By bus
- MEPE runs direct from Terminal MEPE in Barrio México, San José, the old Terminal Atlántico Norte. Four to five hours. The schedule moves. Ask us by email before you plan around it.
- The last stretch

The day here
Rain comes early, then it clears.
Most of it falls before breakfast. By mid-morning the sky is usually back, and the light with it. Forecasts read this coast as wet and stop there. From the garden it looks different. A wet hour at the start, a long clear day behind it, good for walking.
So the day sets itself. Coffee under the roof while it comes down. The path to Playa Grande later, once the trees have finished dripping. Warm water in the jacuzzi at either end of it. The pool takes the middle of the afternoon.
Month by month
The month you are thinking about
Pick one. Only what we have written down, and the gaps named as gaps.
September
The driest stretch. The wind drops and the sea goes flat.
The window opens around 3 September, on a thirty-year average.

What to bring
Short list, humid coast
Sandals that dry, for the path and the sand. A light shell for the early hours. Repellent for after dusk, when the frogs start.
Cotton stays damp on this coast. Quick-dry fabric earns its place in the bag.
